Do not upgrade to iPhone 3G firmware 2.2.1, Apple has released the iPhone 3G firmware 2.2.1 update today. This update upgrades your baseband and as we all know that yellowsn0w only works with baseband 02.28. So If you update right now you won't have an unlocked iPhone 3G.

yellowsn0w won't unlock iPhone 3G 2.2.1!

"How does the ipod touch wheel work", Under the plastic surface of the Click Wheel, there are four mechanical buttons (Menu, back, forward, play/pause), and there's one button in the center (select).

Click Wheel face

There are five buttons and five corresponding contacts on the motherboard. When we press, say, the right side of the wheel while you're listening to a song, the wheel pushes down the forward button. The underside of each rubber button is metal, so pressing it completes the corresponding circuit on the motherboard. The motherboard tells the processor this circuit is complete, and the processor tells the operating system to fast-forward through the song.

The Click Wheel's touch-sensitive function lets us move through lists, adjust volume and fast forward through a song by moving finger around the stationary wheel. It works a lot like a laptop touchpad. In fact, the company that supplied the Click Wheel for the 4G iPod was Synaptics, most widely known for making laptop touchpad's. For the 5G, Apple created its own proprietary Click Wheel design based on the same capacitive sensing principle as the previous Synaptics-designed Click Wheel.

Under the plastic cover of the Click Wheel, there is a membrane embedded with metallic channels. Where the channels intersect, a positional address is created, like coordinates on a graph.

At its most basic, a capacitive-sensing system works like this: The system controller supplies an electrical current to the grid. The metal channels that form the grid are conductors -- they conduct electricity. When another conductor -- say, finger -- gets close to the grid, the current wants to flow to the finger to complete the circuit. But there's a piece of nonconductive plastic in the way -- the Click Wheel cover. So the charge builds up at the point of the grid that's closest to the finger. This build-up of an electrical charge between two conductors is called capacitance.
The closer the two conductors are without touching,
the greater the capacitance.

The "sensing" part of the system comes in with the controller. The Click Wheel controller (see above) is programmed to measure changes in capacitance. The greater the change in capacitance at any given point, the closer the finger must be to that point. When the controller detects a certain change in capacitance, it sends a signal to the microprocessor. As we move finger around the wheel, the charge build-up moves around the wheel with it. Every time the controller senses capacitance at a given point, it sends a signal. That's how the Click Wheel can detect speed of motion -- the faster we move our finger around the wheel, the more compacted the stream of signals it sends out. And as the microprocessor receives the signals, it performs the corresponding action -- increasing the volume, for instance. When the finger stops moving around the wheel, the controller stops detecting changes in capacitance and stops sending signals, and the microprocessor stops increasing the volume.

"iPhone Nano on the way to China first?", A smaller, cheaper iPhone could hit China later this year, now that two companies appear to have gotten contracts to make its chips.(Credit: Apple)

More iPhone Nano rumors are surfacing out of China, as some are starting to wonder whether the much-rumored diminutive iPhone will ship in that region only.
Digitimes picked up on a report from the Economic Daily News that chip makers Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) are set to get the contract to make chips for an iPhone Nano, which was described as a “low-cost entry-level” iPhone. TSMC and UMC are perhaps the two most well-known chip foundries in the business, and are perhaps getting ready to execute Apple’s first iPhone chip design put together by the P.A. Semi team.

No other details were reported. But what of the iPhone Nano itself? Rumors first appeared about such a device in 2007, shortly after the launch of the original iPhone, but quickly died. They were revived late last year when an iPhone case manufacturer added an “iPhone Nano” category to its products.

There’s a theory that the real iPhone Nano is merely the knock-off versions sold in markets in China and other places in Asia, which has proven so popular that demand has grown for cases. But Brian Marshal of Broadpoint AmTech expects Apple to launch such a device at some point this year, and thinks Asia might be the first place it arrives.

Marshal said his checks with suppliers show that AT&T has not received the device yet for testing, which he believes indicates that China could be the likely launch venue for the iPhone Nano and a new Apple relationship with China Mobile or another carrier. If this iPhone really does exist, a June launch would make sense given the pattern set in 2007 and 2008.

yellowsn0w 0.9.6, yellowsn0w 0.9.6 has been released in Cydia and…it works! After testing out how to unlock your iPhone 3G and the other updates, this latest release has been much improved.

If you don't know how to download yellowsn0w, check the download yellowsn0w post.

UPDATES

1. Soon you'll see yellowsn0w 0.9.1 in the repos. It uses a much longer delay to let your SIM card initialize. If you have problems with 0.9.0, try this one and wait a full minute after you see homescreen, then reinsert sim card. We need both success and failure reports to tune this across the world, so please be patient (but please also report result!) As of v 0.9.4 there's no longer a one-minute delay step. If you don't see your carrier when your homescreen comes up, you may still need a sim reinsert (for now).

2. If you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings. Also if you are good with the command line, you can make it much easier by adding the line -q right after the /usr/bin/yellowsn0w line in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.iphone-dev.yellowsn0w.plist (that's and advanced tip, hopefully someone will make a boosprefs type of tool for it) The -q option is now deprecated in 0.9.4+ (it's now always in quick mode, unless you use the -l option for long mode).

3. No PIN support yet. Remember how we said this was beta? Well we're still working out the flow for SIMs with PINs enabled. Please disable any PIN you may have on that SIM before trying yellowsn0w, for now.

4. The unlock will silently quit on anything other than baseband 02.28.00. It detects the wrong version and just quits to avoid any damage. Please double check your Modem Firmware setting in Settings->General->About.

Download Yellowsn0w 0.9.4 beta, The beta version of yellowsn0w 0.9.4 is out and it should fix reinsertion issues for many users. If you haven't tried it yet I suggest you give it a try now! REMEMBER, it's still in beta so you may have problems.

The yellowsn0w download is in the Cydia repo mentioned in the yellowsn0w download post. Post any comments or problems you have over there.

"Download Yellow sn0w to unlock Iphone 3g", yellowsn0w iPhone 3G unlock has been released! This is yellowsn0w version 0.9 and it's still in beta so use it at your own risk.

Note: You must upgrade to the latest 02.28 baseband (firmware 2.2) in order to use this unlock and also jailbreak with QuickPWN/PwnageTool and add Cydia/Installer.

Here is the iPhone 3G firmware 2.2 download link: click here

You can install yellowsn0w 3G unlock by using either Cydia or Installer, whichever you prefer. Below is a list of the repos/sources.

Note: The DevTeam also says that once you are done installing yellowsn0w through Cydia go back to the main menu on Cydia and restart your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed. Wait for the slide to unlock screen, and then wait 10-15 seconds. If you don't see your carrier name pop up you must remove your SIM, insert it again, and wait 10 seconds. (The DevTeam plans on elimintating this step)

Does this work? Post your results

"Unlock iPhone 3G yellowsn0w", The Dev Team has released yellowsn0w, the 3G iPhone unlock. Its available NOW via Cydia, you'll need to add their source (check the release post for the URL - they'd prefer sites didn't link the repo url) then check your Changes tab - yellowsn0w should be right on top. If you don't know how, here's how to add a source in Cydia.

Refresh if you don't see it. If you're reading this later, just search for yellowsn0w in Cydia (making sure of course you've added their source). As guessed (and confirmed a bit later) from their post earlier today, IT WORKS WITH THE 02.28.00 BASEBAND version - in fact, ONLY for that baseband version. Meaning yes, you will need to update in iTunes and then use PwnageTool on a freshly updated 2.2 iPhone if you DON'T have 02.28.00 right now. Running the unlock on older basebands will simply cause it to exit, and do nothing. "No harm, no foul."
All you do is go to the package in Cydia and install just like you'd install any other package. Boom - restart the iPhone, and...

...wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more. If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more. This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.

Then you're unlocked. A quick note for users whose SIM cards come preinstalled with menus or apps on them, you'll

...need to pull and reinsert the SIM once after rebooting the phone to engage the unlock. Even though it’s needed only once per boot, it’s still a nuisance and we’ll be fixing that ASAP... You’ll know if you fall into that “extra step” category if your carrier doesn’t show up within about 10 seconds of the slide to unlock screen.

There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus, these menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes, removing and reinserting the SIM fixes this issue.

"yellowsn0w will work on firmware 2.2 baseband 02.28.0"
Did you ignore the Dev Team's post about upgrading to firmware 2.2? You're in luck! The Dev Team has made yellowsn0w compatible with the newer baseband.

What does this mean?

You can upgrade to a jailbroken firmware 2.2 on your iPhone 3G using PwnageTool (MAC) or QuickPWN (Windows/MAC) regardless of the baseband. Now Windows users will no longer need to get a custom firmware to prepare their iPhone 3G for the unlock. Stay tuned for the yellowsn0w package which will be available in Cydia by 12 PM PST at the latest.

Edit: The following screenshot by Muscle Nerd proves that yellowsn0w will work on ANY baseband. :)
